Travel Tips

1. Be early to be on time. Airlines recommend passengers arrive 75 minutes prior to departure. Why so early? Passengers need time to go through the ticket counter process of getting a board pass and checking in. They also need plenty of time to go through security screening. Depending on the number of passengers on the flight and how well travelers have adhered to security requirements, the screening can take a while. So to make sure the flight gets out on time, it’s the passengers’ responsibility to be early.

2. Liquids, gels, and aerosols are OK to carry on board an aircraft if they pass the 3-1-1 test. Since August 2006 all liquids, gets, and aerosols that are carried on board must be less than 3.4 oz. and in a clear, 1-quart, zip top plastic bag. The bag is placed in a bin or tray in the security screening area for the TSA personnel to view. Having your liquids, gels, and aerosols in a bag speeds up the security process.

3. Become your own travel agent. If you decide to book your own airline ticket on line, one of the most important steps you don’t want to forget is to get your seat assignment. It’s one thing you can do to help insure you won’t be bumped in the event the flight is in an oversold situation.

4. Be patient. Airlines are all about safety. Weather and mechanical situations sometimes require flights to be delayed or cancelled. It’s frustrating when this happens but it’s all about safety. Airline staff will try to keep passengers informed about flight status just as soon as they have updates. In the meantime, be patient.

5. Wondering what is prohibited and what is allowed to take on your air travel? Go to tsa.gov and get the most up to date list of prohibited items. The list does change from time to time so it’s important to see what is allowed in carry on. Pocketknives are not allowed. Clippers are. Torch type lighters are not but regular lighters can be carried on. Long blade scissors are not allowed but scissors under 3 inches are. Check out tsa.gov before you travel.
